Portland is known for being an eco-friendly bike town with people who drink a lot of beer. If you live in Portland and have ever watched Portlandia, you know the show accurately depicts Portland. There are a variety of different people who are all unique, and at the end of each week get together in crowded breweries, bars, and at backyard barbecues. People also get together to hike, bike, walk their dogs, and eat brunch on Sundays. Portland isn’t the place for everybody, but it’s my home and I’m very fond of it. In this series, I show you all the different people that Portland has to offer.
To get images for this concentration, I had to walk around the city taking both candids and portraits of random people I saw on the street. For weeks I had been contemplating an idea for my concentration. I was experimenting when I saw a group of people with tattoos, piercings, and crazy hair. I knew I had to take a picture of them so I started over to them, hearing my heartbeat at a steady but fast pace , a nervous pit in my stomach. They were very polite, I got my picture(image 12), and I even had a conversation with them. This is about what happened for images 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 10. After I took image 12, I knew what I was going to do for this concentration, People of Portland. As I kept asking and taking pictures of people, I got more comfortable taking people’s pictures. When taking portraits, it’s really important to connect with your subject, and catch them at their most natural moment. I was able to slowly do that, go to different parts of Portland, meet new and interesting people, and was able to show that in my work. Each person I took a picture of was unique, had their own characteristics, and were able to get me to my goal; get comfortable meeting and shooting photos of strangers in Portland.
