Concentration ::: CRYSTALS

Statement:

My Concentration is a story. Unlike stories that are told with words, mine is told with images. Each work represents a lyric from the song “Crystals” by the band Of Monsters and Men. “Crystals” is a story about being faced with reality; how we see a clouded world without others.The main character realizes she can’t develop alone. The drawings overlaying the images were added to give this an illustrated storybook touch.

Project Explanation:

When I was struggling with project ideas, my photography teacher wanted me to retrace my steps, back to the beginning, to see where I could develop and improve. We were once asked to pick an old piece we made and continue the idea to possibly rejuvenate that spark. I went further than that. I went back to my base idea of what I originally wanted my AP portfolio to be. I’ve always loved music because each song is a different story. I wanted to capture that story in a different medium. Something special about these photos is that it’s like a picture book, as you look through each image in the order a story is composed. The song depicts that the main character has her struggles with others. For example, in my image expressing “Let your colors bleed and blend with mine” shows how the character was able to help someone open up to her. In my picture, I have a hand that is covered in paint. As you can see it is in color as the rest is in black and white. This represents her being willing to open her heart to them. Another example is from the art piece “I know I’ll wither, so peel away the bark” – I have the girl peeling the bark from a tree, just to reveal herself. This represents her knowing that she has created a thick skin. She soon realizes that she has to open up so she doesn’t fade, so she lets others in to help her grow.
